Beacon Club in Brooklyn, NY
The Beacon club was created in 1993 and practices in the PS 269 Gymnasium, 1957 Nostrand Avenue, Brooklyn, NY and is lead by instructors Rocco Lombardo, 6th Dan and Chris de Prado, 5th Dan. Hundreds of youth from the area have had the opportunity to practice in this program and many have become black belts, often going on to start programs of their own.
Classes meet in the Gymnasium on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
History of the Beacon Club
The Beacon Club was started after Mr Rocco Lombardo returned to Brooklyn after receiving his degree from SUNY Fredonia and has consistently been one of the largest programs in One World Tae Kwon Do. Over fifty Beacon students have reached the rank of Black Belt under the instruction of Mr. Lombardo. Christopher de Prado has been assisting Mr Lombardo in the program since the programís inception and has been the Instructor for the beginnerís class since 2004.
Mr. Rocco Lombardo, 6th Dan. Mr. Lombardo has been actively teaching Tae Kwon Do for over 25 years and is the Instructor for all of the One World Tae Kwon Do programs. He has received a Bachelorís degree in Sociology/ Psychology and a Masterís degree in Sociology. He has successfully taught several programs, including the SUNY Fredonia Club which he founded in 1984. Mr Lombardo has instructed over one thousand students in the Art and over one hundred of these students have reached the level of Black Belt. Mr Lombardo studies the Art with Headmaster Dr. Michael T. Dealy. He currently lives in Pennsylvania with his wife and daughter.
Christopher De Prado, 5th Dan. Mr. De Prado has over 20 years of Tae Kwon Do experience and began practicing in 1986 with Mr. Rocco Lombardo at SUNY Fredonia. . He taught in Upstate New York, and Brooklyn Friends School in Brooklyn, NY, Korean Language and Arts School on Ocean Avenue, NY, and is the current instructor for Beginner's Classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Beacon Program.
Christopher has also won numerous awards, including Dunkirk Big Brother of the year Award, Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution Leadership Medal, Apple Computer Outstanding Teamwork Award, and Multiple Awards of Recognition by the Church Avenue Merchant's Block Association for Service to Youth. Mr. De Prado has a Masterís degree in Education from Long Island University and a B.A. in English from SUNY Fredonia, which he received in 1990. Mr De Prado has participated in many New York City Marathons and has been a tournament champion on numerous occasions. Christopher and his wife Lynette live in the New York City area with their three sons.
